The new frontier of the automotive test: the supportive structure in additive.

23 March 2020A very important sector of application for us is certainly the automotive world. We are noticing that this sector is changing considerably in this last period, either because of social, environmental or strictly economic reasons – an example is the important merger between the giants FCA and PSA.
Although European car manufacturers have been market leaders for generations, now they have to face some difficult questions.
We are experiencing a real race for innovation!
We are focusing on keeping up with a market that is significantly changing over time. The race for automobile electrification, a saturated automotive sector and increasingly technologically-advanced testing laboratories are some of the main factors that contribute to the new revolutionary advances.
Our work takes place in a changing context, we face those changes through innovative designs and the implementation of vibration fixtures and validation supports that allow laboratory tests to be optimized in time and of a better quality.
There isn’t just one possible vibration fixture for testing your product!
This sentence may seem provocative and not very believable for those who perform vibration tests every day, let’s try to explain why we say it.
The chances are that if we had to design a fixture for two different customers, but for the same component, the two supports would almost certainly be designed differently. This is because the parameters that contribute to the definition of the project are manyfold and every client tends to favour one option over the other. It is a matter of balancing all the variables in order to obtain the best possible compromise for every particular situation.
One of the most influential variables is the vibrating system on which the fixture will be used.
Our customers usually have several laboratories all over the world – for the various phases of a product’s life (validation, quality control, etc.). The product is often validated in the R&D laboratory and then tested periodically at the production location. The various testing structures are therefore redirected from one laboratory to another which leads to different machines and instruments being used for testing the same product. Since the vibration fixtures are a sensitive part of the vibrating system on which they are mounted, it is important to know all the transfers that the fixture will undergo in the course of its life and to understand which systems will be used – from the beginning of the concept-designing process. This guarantees the customer an adequate and controlled performance of the fixture over time; an essential part of the process of obtaining reliable and repeatable results from the tests.
Another variable concerns the desired or possible number of samples that can be tested simultaneously. This is one of the free choice parameters that we discuss with our customers. Our great experience allows us to properly evaluate these factors and, together with the customer, identify the most appropriate path in order avoid subsequent errors.
